General Urology

Urology puts particular emphasis on the urinary tracts of males and females as well as the reproductive system of males. Urologists are professionals in the medical field of urology and their primary focus is to diagnose, treat, and control urological disorders. This specialty usually envelops the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra, as well as the male reproductive organs.

Prostate Cancer

The symptoms of prostate cancer may be similar to those of prostate infection or enlargement. Many times there are no symptoms, even when prostate cancer is advanced. These symptoms include the inability to urinate, a weak or halting urinary flow, difficulty starting or stopping urination, frequency of urination (especially at night), blood in the urine, pain or burning during urination, and/or chronic pain in the lower back, pelvis or upper thighs. It is important to see your physician if you have these symptoms, but it is equally important to undergo prostate cancer screening annually, even if you don't have symptoms.

Incontinence

Urinary incontinence has recently gained considerable attention in the United States. It is estimated that approximately 10 to 20 million people (10-35% of the U.S. population) are suffering from urinary incontinence. Nearly 50 percent of the institutionalized elderly are incontinent.

Urinary incontinence is defined as the involuntary loss of urine from the bladder. It is important to remember that not all incontinence is the same. There are several types of incontinence:

  • Stress incontinence

  • Urge incontinence

  • Mixed incontinence

  • Overflow incontinence

  • Functional incontinence

Kidney Problems

Your kidneys filter waste and excess fluid that your body does not need. Their function is essential for good health. Many kidney conditions may be painful, even life-threatening. Many treatment options and methods of prevention are available. If you find that you experience many symptoms of kidney problems, you should make an appointment to see a urologist.

Testicular Cancer

Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in men from age 18 to 34. Fortunately, when detected early, cancer of the testicle is one of the most easily cured types of cancer.
It is crucial for testicular cancer to be diagnosed and treated at an early stage; as it may spread throughout the lymph node system into the lungs and remaining parts of the body if not detected early.

Infertility

Infertility is often defined as not being able to get pregnant in spite of having frequent, unprotected sex for at least a year. If you and your partner are experiencing difficulty becoming pregnant, you are not on your own. As much as 10-15% of couples in the United States are infertile.

If you've been trying to conceive for more than a year, there's a chance that something may be interfering with your efforts to have a child. Infertility may be attributed to one issue in either you or your partner, or a variety of factors may prevent a pregnancy from occurring or continuing.

Prostate Enlargement

Benign enlargement of the prostate gland, also known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), is a common but incompletely understood consequence of aging. The clinical symptoms of frequency, urgency and decreased force of urinary stream, also known as lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are also associated with advancing age.

Erectile Dysfunction

Many men struggle with impotence, the inability to attain or maintain an erection that is satisfactory for both partners. If you suffer from impotence, also called erectile dysfunction, you are not alone. The American Foundation for Urologic Disorders estimates that impotence affects nearly 20 million men in the United States. It is not only an embarrassing problem, but can also be damaging to self-esteem. If you are having trouble with erection a significant percent of the time, you should consider treatment for impotence.

Vasectomy

The vasectomy is a simple office procedure in which a segment of the tubes carrying the sperm from the testicles is removed, and the ends are sealed off. The procedure is performed under a local anesthetic and only takes about ten minutes. A scalpeless vasectomy uses a technique in which an incision is not made. Most men eagerly admit that the procedure is less painful than a visit to the dentist's office. Furthermore, the only medication necessary afterward for the discomfort is a mild anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. In order to minimize the discomfort and complications, it is important to stay off your feet for one to two days after the procedure. Most instances of complications from vasectomies occur because of too much activity following the procedure.
